The news that the Brotherhood of the Apostle James the Brother of God has taken back control of its organ, “Vertograd”, from the heretics Alexander Soldatov and Hieromonk Gregory Lourie, and has publicly repented of the heretical articles and outright lies printed since the year 2001 by Soldatov, has encouraged all lovers of the truth. The members of the Brotherhood are to be congratulated on their courageous struggle against heresy. As the internet journal “Listok” has indicated, this may indeed be the first “signs of cleansing in the ROAC (признаки очищения в РПАЦ).

However, a lessening of the influence of the name-worshipping and Manichaean heretics of the ROAC will have no long-term effect unless the main protector of the heretics, Metropolitan Valentine of Suzdal, is removed from office. When the English Orthodox Parish of St. Michael, Guildford, led by Hieromonk Augustine (Lim) broke communion with Metropolitan Valentine in December, 2002, they did so because they had become convinced not only that heresy had entered the Church, but also that it was being actively protected by the Church’s first-hierarch, who persecuted and expelled all those who publicly disagreed with the heretics. When heresy is protected at the highest level in the Church, so that no conciliar condemnation of the heresy and the heretics is possible, then we know that “the abomination of desolation” is already “standing in the holy place”, and it is time for those “in Judaea”, that is, in the True Church, “to flee to the mountains”, that is, to the saints of the Heavenly Church (Matthew 24.15-16).

Metropolitan Sergius of unhappy memory allowed the communists to take control of the Church in order to save himself from prison. In the same way Metropolitan Valentine is protecting the heretics to take control of the Church in order to save himself from prison. Metropolitan Sergius proclaimed his new allegiance to the God-haters by his infamous “Declaration” of 1927. In the same way Metropolitan Valentine has proclaimed his new allegiance to the God-haters by his sergianist “Declaration” of 2002. The new Sergius, while pretending to condemn sergianism, has by his own shameful example given to the term “sergianism” a new dimension and a new application.

The Apostle James said: “The double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (1.8). Who is the double-minded man? He who pretends to love God while worshipping Mammon. He who pretends to confess the true faith while protecting heresy. He who talks about love while practising hate, so that “out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing” (James 3.10). But to such men the same Apostle James says: “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is an enemy of God” (James 4.4).
